The 2021 season of the AFLW is now underway with a host of former YJFL players making their debuts this past weekend.
The number one draft pick and Fitzroy royalty could not have had a better start as she ran rampant on the Punt Rd Oval wing. Twelve disposals and four marks, Ellie was named in the best for the losing Richmond side. There is plenty for her former Fitzroy and current Richmond community to be excited about with Ellie.

A YJFL star for St Mary’s, Jess Fitzgerald showed immediately why she was the number 2 selection in the AFLW Draft last year. Ten disposals, three tackles and immense pose in tricky situations, Jess looks to fit in perfectly with the Bulldogs line up.

Pick 12 from the Kew Comets, Mimi Hill started off the bench for Carlton and ended with 12 disposals and two marks.

The 22nd pick, Alice O’Loughlin was touted by captain Emma Kearney to ‘give a little bit of spark up forward’ as her forward kicking ability is the reason she was selected. Alice started the game on the half forward flank and finished with two disposals.

Former Ashy Redback and pick 15 Eliza McNamara was a standout for the seasoned Demons team. Her off season triumph of winning the 2km time trial were shown against the Suns as she worked hard up and down the Metricon Stadium wing, collecting 18 disposals. Lize, also took three marks and laid two tackles in a game where she showed her run and carry potential.

We’d like to make special mention to two former YJFL players in Nicola Xenos (Kew Comets) and Maddy Guerin (Fitzroy).
In her second season with the Saints, Nicola tore her ACL in the left knee on the eve before her Round 1 clash. Nicola showed amazing potential during her first season playing all the regular season games and averaging 9.3 disposals. The YJFL wishes Nicola all the best in her recovery.
Former Roy, Maddy Guerin made her return to the AFLW in Round 1 with new team Carlton after a prolonged absence due to a knee injury. Maddy had seven disposals and two marks in her return. We congratulate Maddy on her return and wish her all the best for a great season with the Blues.
