Former Collingwood AFLW player Penny Cula-Reid has joined the Yarra Junior Football League as Female Football Ambassador for the 2020 season.
An influential player and coach, Penny played her football with the St Kilda Sharks in the VWFL before joining the Collingwood Magpies in 2017 for the inaugural season of AFLW. At the beginning of 2018 she took the reigns as coach of the first Magpies VFL Women’s team – being awarded the VFLW Coach of the Year in 2018 and leading the club to a premiership in 2019. Keen for a new challenge in 2020, she has moved to Williamstown as their VFL Women’s head coach. Penny is most noted for her trailblazing efforts as a teen when she took her case through the legal system to allow girls to play in mixed competitions up to under 14 level.
Penny’s association with the YJFL began in 2019 when she coached the Yarra Magpies Under 15 Girls Division 1 team. Keen to continue her connection with the Yarra Junior Football League, Penny has taken the role as the YJFL Female Football Ambassador this year.
As part of the role, she will be co-ordinating and presenting a ‘Level 0’ coaching course and presenting at the Level 1 Coaching Female Teams seminar early in the season. Penny has also committed to;
Attending a mid-year coaches forum for YJFL coaches
Coaching the YJFL Under 16 Girls Representative team that will play in Shepparton during the first week of July
Attending various YJFL events
Penny may also be able to assist any of our clubs who are interested in running mentoring sessions for coaches of girls’ teams.
We look forward to Penny Cula-Reid’s involvement with the YJFL during 2020.
