The YJFL Umpire fraternity were extremely lucky to last night (June 17th) have AFL field umpire Martin Rodge in attendance, discussing what a normal week looks like as an AFL Umpire, as well as what goes into umpiring a game at the highest level.
Earlier this season Martin officiated an Under 14 YJFL game with one of our up & coming YJFL umpires Luke Bittigieg as part of Community Umpiring week, with last night showcasing his continued support for giving back to grassroot level AFL umpiring.
With over 100 umpires in attendance, it was a fantastic opportunity for our aspiring umpires to learn some of the finer details and ins and outs of the highest-level umpire requirements. As well as discussing his week in the life of an AFL umpire, Martin also conducted a coaching session specifically dedicated to protecting the ball carrier free kicks.
The YJFL is extremely grateful to have someone of Martin's caliber take a session with so many young umpires in attendance. We thank Martin once again for his ongoing support of Community Umpiring within the YJFL.
Wanting to join the YJFL umpiring team? The YJFL is seeking new umpires (U14 – Mature Age) to officiate matches in 2024. Please head to our Umpiring page of the website to register your interest or contact Cameron Nash (Programs Manager – Club & Umpiring) at cameron.nash@yarrajfl.org.au.
