The event started with YJFL President Ishbel Moodie opening the night and welcoming all guests back to football in the YJFL. The new League President inducted at last years League AGM was thrilled to have junior footy return. ‘Tonight is a big deal for our League, the first event from our new home at Ford Park and the season opener out on the ground. It has been a massive effort from our staff, club volunteers and every player and their families to get us to this point, but this weekend it is shown why it is all worth while.’
The night was highlighted by the appearance and speech from the new Head of AFL Victoria, Ben Kavenagh. Ben spoke of his new role and the effect the outlook of a full season has had on those he has meet so far, he told those in attendance how he was the most excited in the room for the community footy season to begin. ‘This is my first official game of footy in this new role and it’s sure to be one I remember. It’s been a long off season and there’s been a lot of work completed especially by the volunteers. The YJFL is a fantastic League and competition and this will be a fantastic year for Yarra.’
Another special guest in attendance was YJFL Patron and three-time premiership player for the Brisbane Lions, Luke Power, who spoke on how good it was that footy is now back and the effect it will have in enhancing the wellbeing of the players.
