Six of the best selected in AFLW Draft

The AFLW 2020 National Draft is over and complete as of Tuesday night, with six former YJFL players selected to a team in the AFLW.

In a year of very little women’s football, especially in Victoria with the AFLW and NAB League seasons cut short and VFLW and community football cancelled the advent of the women’s draft was a welcome event.

A total of 600 girls had been nominated for this year’s draft, with 57 spots being taken by the 14 member clubs.

It is with great pleasure that the YJFL can say that six former players of the League were selected.

Of those six players both the first (Ellie McKenzie) and second (Jess Fitzgerald) picks of the draft are past players.

Ellie is a former Fitzroy player since she was eight years old and Jess from St Mary’s has over 55 games for the Burra’s. These two share a close bond, both co-captains of the Northern Knights and attend the same school.

Our major community partner Collingwood FC are in for a treat after they selected Joanna Lin from Bulleen Templestowe. Jo has 39 games of experience with the Bullants and was chosen in the 2019 Youth Girls Team of the Year.

Kew Comets had the most success with two girls selected in the draft, pick 12 (Mimi Hill) and pick 22 (Alice O’Loughlin).

Ashy Redbacks had former 22 game player Elizabeth McNamara selected at pick 15. Eliza also represented the YJFL representative side in 2017 playing four games.
