Dear Boys & Girls, Mums & Dads and Community,
I am out at our Bulleen Park HQ, packing up again for the lockdown, as I write to you. The YJFL Board met last night and asked me to write to you about yesterday’s announcements of an additional 6 weeks of lockdown for metropolitan Melbourne.
Yesterdays decision is extremely disappointing for our boys & girls, but one we know was made by the Government with their best interests in mind.
Clearly, there will be no YJFL games this weekend, & as it currently stands for the next 6 weeks, but … I want you all to know that we are deferring the season, not cancelling it.
Yarra will be back. Junior Footy will be back.
To our boys & girls I say this – Keep your head up, we have to put yesterdays disappointment aside, and lets keep looking ahead to Round 1. Matty Rowell, a former YJFL player at Canterbury Cobra’s, used the first lockdown to hone his skills, and it looks like he had 3 BOG’s early on – follow his lead.
Our commitment to you our players & families is to get a season going if that is at all possible. Keep doing your personal training, & talking to your coaches on Zoom – you need to be ready for maybe 6 weeks of games, and 2 weeks of finals. While there is any chance at all, we will keep trying to get games fixtured. We know how important it is to you to get back with your teammates.
Of course, for any season to run we need to have our Club committees to be able to put in the time & effort to get things organised, something we would never take for granted. Some clubs or teams may not be able to run – we understand that. For those that are able, we will be ready.
I therefore need to thank our club committees, and especially our Club Presidents for the incredible effort in trying to get a 12-round season up & running. Your Presidents are an amazing group of people, and we are so lucky to have such outstanding community leaders in our League.
In the meantime, please make sure you FOLLOW our Facebook page for further video updates from us. There is much for us to consider over the next few weeks, including the date by when a season becomes unviable. I will have more to say about that as the situation in Victoria become clearer.
Those of you that know Jeff Hooper (YJFL President) & the YJFL team, know that we will do whatever we can to keep our kids active and engaged in our great game.
STAY SAFE EVERYBODY, & thanks for being part of the Yarra community. I’ll be in touch.
Regards, Tim Murray YJFL CEO
