As the AFLW season comes to a close, we take a look back at the players who are former players of the YJFL. 22 women have been drafted to AFLW clubs with nearly all taking part in this season.
Eight draftees from the class of 2019 were former players in the YJFL with five of them making their debuts in round 1. Those players were; Gemma Lagioia, Rosie Dillon, Nicola Xenos, Sarah Sansonetti and Rebecca Privitelli. In round 6, pick six Nell Morris-Dalton made her debut for the Western Bulldogs, starting on the forward flank. Krstel Petrevski is yet to make her debut for the Demons but has been named as an emergency on multiple occasions. Emily Harley is also yet to make her debut for the Tigers nonetheless she is an up and comer for the future of Richmond.
Daisy Bateman Former Whitehorse Colt, Daisy was drafted at pick 25 in the 2018 AFLW draft. She has proved a star in the 2020 season and kicked a goal in round 1 of the season as she played predominately at deep forward. In her round two clash against the Giants Daisy “again looked dangerous around goals. While she only had the four disposals and two tackles, she has plenty of implied pressure and provides an option at the feet of the talls.” Round 3, Daisy kicked another two goals, 12 disposals and two tackles in North’s win against Richmond. Daisy kept her goal scoring ways through round 4 kicking another two against the Suns. Round five she had five disposals and four marks. In the round 6 clash against Geelong Daisy “again provided pressure up forward for the Kangaroos resulting in a goal for her five mark and five tackle effort.”
Tilly Lucas-Rodd Tilly, who formally played for Richmond and East Malvern, took her talents from Carlton to St Kilda in 2020. Being named co-captain of the Saints she starred in her first game, collecting 16 disposals and showed strong marking signs by gathering three marks. She featured in the best against Fremantle collecting another 16 disposals and has been an intercept collector across the half back line for the Saints.
Rebecca Privitelli Rebecca a GWS Giant started off the year with a bang, winning the round 1 mark of year. She also collected 14 disposals and scored the match winning behind. Her second game was even more memorable, as she booted three goals and earned herself the best on ground award. In a loss to the Lions, Rebecca was still influential kicking a goal. The star goal kicker put through another two against the struggling Tigers in round 5.
Gemma Lagioia At the number eight pick in the draft Gemma was primed to have a standout 2020 season, and that she did. She made her debut in round 1 where she “looked classy with her six touches, two marks, two tackles and two rebounds.” Round 2 Gemma had nine disposals and two inside 50’s. in round 3 Gemma had eight touches. Round 4 Gemma was named in the best where she got the ball for 12 disposals and took three marks.
Nicola Xenos Former Kew Comet and drafted to the Saints in 2020, Nicola was born to be an Aussie Rules player. She has averaged four kicks, six handballs and four tackles a game this season where she has played every game. In round 2, Xenos had 12 disposals, four marks, three tackles, two inside 50s and a rebound. Round 3 was where Xenos could show her pace out of the back third and collected seven disposals and two marks. She laid an impressive six tackles in the round 6 clash with Carlton to go with 11 disposals and her first goal.
Rosie Dillon The 24th pick in the AFLW draft from the Whitehorse Colts made her senior debut in round 1. But it was round 3 where finally showed the Saints fans why she was so highly touted. She picked up 16 touches in the Saints win against the Dees. Again, in round 4 she starred being named in the best with a game high 18 disposals. She has average 13.5 disposals and six tackles per game.
Sarah Sansonetti Making her debut in round 1 for the Tigers on the half forward flank, Sarah showed her strength with a game-high 10 tackles and five disposals. Named in the best for round 2, Sarah 20 disposals, two tackles, one mark and one inside 50 to be the equal-second biggest ball winner on the ground. Playing in five games this season she averaged 4.2 tackles a game.
Nell Morris-Dalton Nell made her debut in round six against the Dockers and she collected eight disposals and five tackles. The former Fitzroy player and pick six in the AFLW draft Nell loves her footy and is sure to be a breakout star in 2021.
Jessica Dal Pos Jess played her juniors with Ivanhoe before being drafted to GWS. Jess is full class on the half back line and was stand in captain in the round 6 clash against Adelaide, that her Giants won by 5 points.
Pepa Randall Pepa who is another from East Malvern, was drafted to Melbourne but has since moved to the Giants. Pepa played off the half back line in round 1 adding some experience to the GWS list.
Louise Stephenson A former Parade St Damians player and prolific goal kicker in 2012 and 2013, Louise has stayed at GWS since being drafted. In 2020 Louise has been a handy player coming off the bench.
Jasmine Grierson Former Whitehorse Colt, Jasmine plays for North Melbourne and is in her fourth season at AFLW level. Playing in the midfield predominantly, Jasmine has been an incredibly valuable asset to the Kangaroos.
Deanna Berry A current Western Bulldog, Deanna has only missed one game this season. She missed one game due to concussion. A star in the VFLW season Berry, is a young gun with many years left to be a star for the Dogs.
Katie Lynch Katie made her debut for the Magpies in round 4 against the Demons in a 20-point loss. She totalled five disposals and one tackle. Formally of Camberwell and Kew Rovers, Katie was pick 11 at the 2018 AFLW draft.
Eleanor Brown Bulldog draftee and former Glen Iris player had a good 2020 season. She played well in round 3 having four disposals and four tackles. Round 4 she had her best game to date with 12 disposals and five marks. Round 6 she totalled 11 disposals and three tackles.
Sarah Perkins Sarah made her long-awaited debut for the Demons after being on the list as a supplementary player. In her first game back, she kicked a goal before the final siren, took two marks and laid three tackles.
Madeleine Guerin Maddy a player for the Demons and formally of Fitzroy in the YJFL, unfortunately suffered an ACL injury against St Kilda in their round 3 clash. Prior to that Maddy played in the first-round clash, collecting 4 disposals.
Jayde Van Dyk Former Seville player Jayde Van Dyk has only managed one game in the 2020 season. Getting 11 disposals in that one game showed great potential but she unfortunately gathered an injury that put her out of round 2 and the subsequent season.
Katherine Smith Katherine of Melbourne suffered an ACL injury prior to Christmas which ruled her out of the entire 2020 season. Previous to that she played 21 games for the Dees.
Krstel Petrevski Krstel hasn’t received her debut this season. She was named as an emergency in the clash against West Coast in round 5.
Emily Harley Emily has been unable to slot into the Richmond side this season.
Brianna Green Brianna, a former East Malvern player was drafted to Fremantle. After some injury setbacks she moved to her favourite club growing up, the West Coast Eagles. Unfortunately, Brianna hasn’t played in 2020.
