Safeguarding Children

Child Safe Standards

The Child Safe Standards have been introduced by Victorian State Government as a compulsory, minimum standard of safety in all organisations providing services to children. The Standards aim to drive cultural change in organisations, so that protecting children from abuse is embedded in everyday thinking and practice. Each of the Standards must also be understood and applied with the context of the following in mind:
 

  • The cultural safety of Aboriginal children

  • The cultural safety of children from a culturally and/or linguistically diverse background

  • The safety of children with a disability
     

Child Safe Standards (as of July 2022):
 

  • Establishment of a culturally safe environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children

  • Leadership, governance and culture

  • Children’s participation and empowerment

  • Family and community involvement

  • Equity and diverse needs

  • Human resource management

  • Child focus complaints process

  • Staff education and training

  • Physical and online environments

  • Review and continuous improvement

  • Child Safe policies and procedures

Commitment Statement

Statement of Commitment to Child Safety

The Yarra Junior Football League recognise that Children need special care and attention. As such, The Yarra Junior Football League are committed to the protection and safety of Children. The Yarra Junior Football League aim to protect the welfare of Children involved in the sport of football by creating, implementing and complying with the following measures.

In recognising the need for an emphasis to be placed on the safety of Children in football, The Yarra Junior Football League are committed to:
 

  1. ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Children who participate in Yarra Junior Football League’s activities and ensuring that their experiences within football in the league are positive;

  2. ensuring Children are empowered and know what behaviour is and is not acceptable;

  3. ensuring Children know how to report (and where to report) an incident and feel empowered to do so if they are either subject to, or become aware of, potential abuse or misconduct;

  4. prioritising and addressing the concerns of Children in relation to their safety;

  5. undertaking thorough screening processes to reduce the risk of people with improper motives being involved in Yarra Junior Football League’s activities.

  6. communicating openly with parents of Children and always ensuring safety of Children is paramount; and

  7. remaining vigilant to ensure best practice standards in relation to Child safety are utilised in delivering Yarra Junior Football League’s services and activities.
     

Yarra Junior Football League will, in addition to the above, also take reasonable steps to promote the cultural safety of Aboriginal Children and Children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds as well as promoting the safety of Children with a disability.
