ROUND TWO – WEEKLY WRAP

24th April, 2018

With more sunshine then the previous week, Round Two was a very important round for the Yarra Junior Football League as this was our ANZAC Round. It was great to see so many clubs participate in the last post and in a minute silence, to remember those who fought for our country. Well done to the clubs for such a great day. It was also great to see so many clubs with special ANZAC Day jumpers and even St Marys ground with the ANZAC logo.

This round was very important for our clubs too, here are some special stories from our clubs.

BULLEEN- TEMPLESTOWE:

Some years ago, as a mark of respect to life member and WWII veteran Ted Kelly, the club created a medal in his honour which is awarded to a player in each team that displays the ANZAC spirit courage, endurance, initiative, discipline, and mateship during the Anzac Day round.  The honoured player is presented with their Ted Kelly Medal at Family Night on the Sunday night, nowadays, by a member of the late Ted Kelly’s family.

MACLEOD:

Macleod JFC had Jeff Mawkes (President – Watsonia RSL) present the Under 13 with their commemorative jumpers and taught the players the meaning of ANZAC spirit.

ST MARYS:

St Marys were honoured to have Bill and Berdine from the Greensborough RSL join the club to celebrate this round.  Both were actively involved in the day addressing both home and away teams in the Youth girls and colts boys, then addressing the 300 strong crowd at a after match dinner.

The club was able to raise over $1000 to support the RSL. On ANZAC Day itself, St Marys will be involved in a very special memorial service conducted by the Greensborough RSL.  The RSL have extended an invitation for all St Marys Players and Families to attend the Memorial Service which will begin opposite the RSL at 8.30am.  The Colts 1, Colts 2 and Youth Girls Captains will represent the club by laying a wreath in respect.

On Wednesday the 18th YJFL hosted the club presidents and club coordinators dinner. This was a great event which gave clubs the opportunity to meet each other and welcome the new presidents. David Mitton from SALT (Sport & Life Training) which delivered a fantastic presentation on the education programs they deliver to clubs. More information on SALTS services will be provided to clubs and available on the website. Jeff Hooper the president of the board discussed a number of topics and changes the league will be making during the year. For a full wrap of the night head to our website.
