in the Division 1 Grand Finals at Box Hill Football Ground on Saturday, the two Yarra teams played off for the Championships in Under 14 and Under 15. In the Under 14's, Yarra had a huge win against the Eastern Football League with Yarra scoring 25.6 - 156 to defeat the EFL 2.10.22. Tom Havers, with nine goals, won the Best on Ground medal as awarded by the umpires. This was the third year in a row that the YJFL have won the Under 14 Division 1 trophy, all under coach Brad Lederman. Congratulations to all the players and coaching staff and officials for their fantastic effort. In the Under 15's, Yarra was also playing for its third successive Champinship under long time coach Justin Wenke. After a hard fought game with the Dandenong District Junior Football League where Yarra trailed until the last quarter, they came from four goals behind to hit the front with a few minutes to go. Dandenong hit back with the last two goals of the match to take out the Championship by 8 points. Yarra 10.4 - 64 were defeated by Dandenong 10.12 - 72. Again, congratulations to all the players, coaches and officials for the enormous effort they put in to the Championships. Round 3 Reports Under 14 Div 1 YJFL 10.7 - 67 defeated Northern FL 2.2 - 14 Goal Kickers: T. Havers 3, D. Tomat 2, J. Sinclair 2, J. Billings , T. Cutler , B. Lennon Best Players: D. Tomat, B. Lennon, B. Strathmore, J. Billings, H. Curnow, R. Cleaver Northern confirmed that they had, for some months, identified Yarra as their biggest challenge, and this showed through their game intensity. Yarra performed soundly on the night and finished up clear winners, however, the final score did not reflect the evenness of the play. The damp conditions reduced the amount of clean possessions throughout, and made shepherds, blocks, tackles etc all the more important. It was very pleasing that Yarra has steadily improved in these areas over the carnival, but the boys will need to step it up another level for the Grand Final. The Yarra team spirit is emerging. Under 14 Division 2 - NFL 10.3 63 defeated YJFL 9.3 57 Best Players: D Mifsud, A Anderson, J Lee, M Stanley, B MossutoGoal Kickers: M Stanley 3, D Smith 2, T Beddison 2, J Hayes 1, C Turner 1 In a very close and tight game where the lead changed constantly the boys played hard and tough football. In the last quarter the boys dominated the play and possession but were unable to put it on the scoreboard. Northern kicked a goal very late in the last quarter against the run of play to win by 6 points. Under 15 Division 1 Best Players: Walmsley, Cookson and Chris Gleeson. Goal kickers Walmsley 3, Jaksch 3, Cookson 1, Hrovat 1 The Under 15 first team played Northern Football League on Wednesday night and suffered their first loss of the carnival. It was obvious from the first bounce that NFL wanted the win more than our boys. Our boys and were not as hard to the ball as NFL, the team made bad decisions throughout the game and NFL were successful in shutting down some of our better players. Complacency led to our boys not following the game plan but it is nothing that can't be fixed and should we play in the Grand Final we are sure a different team will take to the ground.

Our boys worked hard in testing weather and wore MSJFL down taking control of the game toward the end of the first quarter and never letting up. Both teams went hard and tackled ferociously but noticeably Yarra often had 2 or 3 boys laying a tackle on the same opposition player. The final score was not indicative of the hard fought game. Our boys won the game by making really smart decisions throughout the game. Goal Kickers: N. Walmsley 3, N. Hrovat 2, K. Jaksch 2, L. Celebicanin 2, K. Posar , J. MacRae , L. McCann Best Players: L. Andrianakis, J. Ashby, L. Celebicanin, N. Hrovat, K. Posar Under 14 Division 1 - YJFL 13.7 - 85 defeated Moorabin Saints JFL 8.10 - 58 Game 2 saw the YARRA under 14s take to the field at 10AM at Bulleen Park against a very strong and well drilled Moorabin team. Following Moorabins big win in game 1, YARRA knew they would be the team tobeat and after a shaky first 5 minutes, the boys increased the tempo and physically hit Moorabin as hard as they could. This seemed to work as YARRA's second quarter was very good opening up a few goals break at half time. Not taking their foot off the pedal, YARRA held a determined come back from Moorabin and eventually ran out the game well. The best player for YARRA was Jack Billings, but there were many good players and the win required a full team effort We now look forward to taking on Northern, at Bulleen Park on Wednesday week in a night game Goal Kickers: B. Lennon 3, T. Havers 2, A. Scott 2, B. Hogan , J. Nitsopoulos , P. Arceri , D. Tomat , J. Sinclair , J. McCormack Best Players: J. Billings, P. Arceri, L. McDonald, C. Lindsey, R. Wilton, B. Lennon Under 14 Division 2 - YJFL 5.4 - 34 defeated by Eastern FL 11.11 - 77 Best Players: B Mossuto, T Beddison, A Anderson, D Cappellari, C Conlon & J HarkinsGoal Kickers: D Cappellari 2, J Harkins 1, A Sanflippo 1, D Smith 1 The boys played with 17 only players in the first half and battled valiantly. In the second half we had eighteen players and matched Eastern around the ground and on the scoreboard. The boys never gave up and acquitted themselves well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Round 1 Reports received - Played 6/6/09 For full scores of all matches in all divisions see http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-5062-0-72897-0&a=COMPS Under 15 Division 1 - YJFL 21.12 - 138 defeated Western Region FL 6.5 - 41 Our boys came up against WRFL in their first game of the carnival and were slow to get going but when they did we witnessed some fine football. Many passages of play mirrored what they had been doing on the training track. They were hard to the ball and their pre-game preparation was telling in their performance. There were multiple goal scorers and 24 great contributors. Other than their level of intensity falling away in the last quarter the boys stuck to their game plan and had a convincing win. Goals: Jaksch 6, Celebicanin 3, Cowell 2, Posar 2, Walmsley 2, Andrianakis 1, Banfield 1, Bruhn, 1, Cigagna 1, Hrovat, 1, Pell 1 Best: MIki, Bolger, Celebicanin, Jaksch, McLaughlan, Wiseman
Under 14 Division 1 - YJFL 17.13 - 115 defeated Western Region FL 3.6. - 24 The game went well today. Yarra kicked 7 goals to nil in Quarter 1, 5 to nil in Quarter 2 and 5 to nil in Quarter 3. Last quarter, Western Region kicked 3 to our nil. We finished up with a few fairly sore boys. It was a fairly tight game – not many easy possessions, and not exactly free flowing. Yarra were just better at getting the ball, especially early on. Best players:- Lindsey (medal winner), McDonald, Arceri, Clever, Hogan, Lennon Goals:- Hogan 4, McDonald 3, Cutler 2, Polidoros 2, Collins 1, Lennon 1, Tomat 1, Nitsopoulos 1, Havers 1, McCormack Under 14 Division 2 - YJFL 10.11 - 71 defeated Western Region FL 9.3 - 57 Best Players: A Anderson, C Conlon, T Beddison, B Mossuto, H Vogler & D MifsudGoal Kickers: T Beddison 4, J Harkins 2, W Hayes 1, J Hayes 1, M Stanley 1, D Cappellari 1. All game the team was hard at the ball and applied great pressure which created many turnovers. The boys demonstrated good ball control and after a very tight first half dominated possession in the last half to come away with a good hard fought win. The boys have jelled well as a team and we look forward to our match on Monday v Eastern.
