The Yarra Junior Football League was formed in 1997 through amalgamation of the former Doncaster & Districts Junior Football League and the Hawthorn Districts Junior Football League and is now one of the largest Junior Leagues in Melbourne.
In 2007 the League is expected to comprise 29 Clubs fielding a total of over 280 teams. Games are played on a Sunday with some night games on a Friday evening. It is envisaged that there will be total of 30 competitions in 2007 covering all Age Groups up to Colts (Under 16/17 combined Age) and including Tackers (Under 9 years) modified rules competitions where young players are introduced to Club football in a non competitive environment.
The large number of teams in the League allows grading of teams within each age group so that each team, as far as is possible, plays in a grade that is commensurate with the team’s ability. Grading games are played in Rounds 1 – 4 to determine if the Grade (Section) for all teams should be varied for the remainder of the season.
We are all aware of the current need to conserve water at home. The drought is also affecting the grounds we use for junior football. I have recently visited 12 to 15 grounds in the Yarra area and have found that some are very good and some very poor and many grounds in between. At this stage ground availability for the start of the season is uncertain. There are meetings programmed with Councils in regard to ground usage. I would suggest that club officials keep in contact with various councils in relation to their grounds. Yarra is spread over a number of Councils and at this stage it is difficult to determine the season starting date. All Clubs will be advised as soon as the situation is clearer
It is with great regret to inform all members of the passing away, late last year, of Peter Johnston Vice President /General Manager Football.
P.J. as we all knew him, will be a sad loss to the Yarra Junior Football League. Players, parents, League and Club Officials will always remember him.
